Mandy and Andrew have started planning to host a local "Walk Across Canada In A Day". This is an event held in Ontario by Jesse's Journey which raises funds for research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Thanks to Bing (yes, Andrew used Microsoft's Mapping tool instead of Google's), Andrew was able to put together a route for the walk. Total from start to finish is 11Km. The full walk for Jesse's Journey is 33Km, which means three times around. Yup, you read that right, 33Km. That's 20 miles for the older generation.
That's step one. Next up will be to talk to the city and see if we require any permits, and what if any signage we can use to give directions to walkers. Mandy and Andrew thought they would have three different versions of the walk, a 5Km, 11Km, and the full 33Km. They do realize that 33Km is a long way to walk for a lot of people.
Also on the list of todos is to find someone who can make or donate some signs for the route. Not only to direct people on how to stay on course, but also to let them know how far they've traveled and where the next rest stop is. Speaking of rest stops, they'll need to find some of those as well. Hopefully they can find 2 or 3 places that will let the walkers come in, use the facilities, and maybe have a snack and beverages available. So much to plan for, and that's just organizing the walk. There's still all the fundraising that is sort of the real focus of the walk. There's still lots to do, and not that much time, the walk is tentatively planned for May 7th, to coincide with the walk in Ontario.
Have a look at the proposed route. For the most part, the little markers are there just to allow Andrew to have points to mark the path, which in turns gives the distance of the full route.
